Maria Blondeel

Maria Blondeel (1963, Halle) first appeared on the radar of contemporary art in 1985 as part of the group exhibition Tekenen at Ghent’s Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst. In those years she was experimenting with light-sensitive emulsions, electronic sound generators, stereography and stereophonic sound, inspired by the New York Experimental Intermedia scene. The results of these experiments ultimately formed the basis of her artistic production, which gradually came to straddle visual art and sound art.

From 1986 to 1991, Maria Blondeel worked as a lay-out designer for Stichting Logos, a centre for contemporary and experimental music in Ghent. There she met international composers and collaborated on audiovisual projects with the likes of Mary Jean Leach and Jerry Hunt. In the years spanning 1993 and 2003, Blondeel was active as a co-founder and curator of Experimental Intermedia Ghent together with Phill Niblock, among others. She curated numerous exhibitions and regularly worked in the context of artist organisations and Experimental Intermedia.

Her current remastering project BLWDRKland comes as the result of her poetic, experimental approach to art and technology. Maria Blondeel’s work has been shown at festivals, museums and galleries including in the United States, Japan, Germany and Belgium.
