The nostalgic sentiment in Latem art
As part of the collection presentation Het Erf, MDD – in collaboration with Latemse Kunstkring en Erfgoed Deurle – presents the lecture The nostalgic sentiment in Latem art on 28 April and 11 May.
Dr Raphaël Van Lerberge evokes the cultural and political climate in which the collection of Jules and Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens and their museum originated.
The history of Latem art, permeated with a ‘nostalgic sentiment’, developed in the 19th century as a reaction to the growing modernity. The idyllic nature in Deurle and Latem, in particular, contrasted the ongoing urbanization and attracted both notable figures and artists. From this grew an artistic language that gained social and political support, including in the Flemish Movement.
