HISK - JUST A FOUR-LETTER WORD
The laureates of the HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts) will be guests at MDD from December 9 to January 6, 2008, this year.
The exhibition, titled JUST A FOUR-LETTER WORD, showcases the work of eleven artists working in a wide range of disciplines.
As is customary each year, an exhibition featuring the work of that year’s laureates is organized in December. For the first time, this exhibition is being held outside the secure studio walls of the HISK. The publication and the exhibition are curated in close collaboration between the HISK, the artists, and the MDD.
The HISK organizes post-academic training in the field of visual and audiovisual arts in Flanders. It provides twenty-five young artists from both within and outside the country with their studio and special guidance for two years. The emphasis at the HISK is particularly on individual practice, with an international focus.
The focal point is the guest lectureships of artists, curators, critics, and theorists who regularly conduct individual studio visits. Due to the unique concept of the HISK, the candidate laureates have the opportunity to seriously invest in the critical examination of their work and place it in a broader artistic, cultural, and societal context.
Since 1997, 126 laureates have graduated from the HISK. Most of them have built successful professional careers in the Flemish and international art world.
