untitled 2018 (the infinite dimensions of smallness), 2018–2021 is the second in an annual series of commissions for the sculpture garden, following Hagioscoop by Atelier Van Lieshout in 2020.
Rirkrit
Tiravanija’s 20-metre-long maze is modelled on the floor plan of MDD's
largest gallery space. Instead of the museum’s central glass cube, the
labyrinth leads visitors to a Japanese wooden teahouse in the middle.
Like much of Tiravanija's work, untitled 2018 (the infinite dimensions of smallness)
requires direct presence and personal engagement, offering
opportunities for socialising, interaction and activating the senses. In
earlier versions of the work (in Singapore and Poitiers, both in 2018),
the maze was made of bamboo.
For MDD, the artist replaced wood
with metal scaffolding, in reference to the recent renovation at the
museum, linking the ongoing work at the museum to the rules of
hospitality.
Every first Sunday of the month, the pavilion is activated during a free tea ceremony.
