Sterling Ruby
Droppa Blocka

From the beginning of his now ten-year career, Sterling Ruby set out to explore the boundaries of modern art history. Important in this respect is his unbridled urge to create and produce. He makes paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, collages and ceramic work. He is proficient in any technique and quite multifaceted in his approach to production.

In his early paintings, he uses subcultural idioms such as graffiti as a basis for large-scale meditative abstract works. In his sculptures, he explores the conflict between form and content by accentuating the scale, the weight, or the texture of the work in unusual ways.

The exhibition is divided into two parts. A first series of sculptures is shown in the garden. The works refer to existing objects such as the roadblock, the electric chair and the bat. They are characterized by their simple abstract structure, bright colours and excessive proportions. They are dissociated from their origins and become – even as artworks – almost unrecognizable.

A new installation by Sterling Ruby is presented in the patio space. It consists in part of recycled and reworked older forms, completed and combined with new giant soft sculptures. The installation is a total experience that speaks of the possibility of the impossible.
