De ridder, 1960

In a composition with predominantly blue colours in combination with white and black smudges, the human figure is not immediately recognisable. The power of De Ridder is rather insinuated by the impulsive and powerful strokes on the canvas. The paint seems to explode from within the entire canvas. Typical for the work of Jan Burssens is the use of the dripping method, under the influence of Action painting, and the processing of sand and gravel in the paint so that a strong relief in the material is obtained.
