La rumanie, 1894

Wanneer Toorop in 1883 zijn opleiding verderzet in Brussel ontmoet hij vooraanstaande figuren uit de avant-gardistische milieus en laat zich beïnvloeden door James Ensor en Fernand Khnopff. Hij stelt ook tentoon bij de groep Les XX in Brussel, het toen belangrijkste forum in België van het symbolisme en de art-nouveau.
