These monumental canvases, donated by the artist to MDD in 1990, are sculptures that hang on the wall. Perry Roberts’ paintings are spatial works. They are made of strips of canvas sewn together. Roberts reuses classical elements from Western painting, such as the linen canvas, a wooden stretcher, and gesso paint, but does not paint motifs. Roberts paints variations of regular color fields, clear rhythms, and calm proportions. The work refers to itself, it does not raise questions, it ‘speaks for itself’ – like architecture?
